
Actor Cha Hak-yeon is opening up about his fierce dedication to his work and his honest struggles as an actor.
In the ‘Berry Star Interview’ on
Cha Hak-yeon reveals that he went through weight loss and meticulously prepared his speech and facial expressions to play ‘Gauss’, a cold-hearted math genius teacher. He shared, “The director wanted a cold and chilly image, so I lost weight,” adding, “I practiced a lot to make the ends of my sentences sound sharp.” He also revealed his immersion in the character, saying, “I kept practicing my lines even while walking.”
He also caught attention by revealing that he memorized all the actual math formulas for his role. Cha Hak-yeon explained his passion, saying, “I memorized them to the point where I could write on the board immediately if someone asked me to. I thought looking at a reference while writing wouldn’t suit the character.”
Behind-the-scenes stories of his comic acting were also shared. Recalling a scene where he faints after being hit by bird droppings, he laughed and said, “The other actor’s performance was so funny that I had so many NGs because my body was shaking.” He also mentioned the joyful atmosphere, stating, “This project had the most laughter on set among all the works I’ve done so far.”
When asked about a role he covets, he sparked laughter with an unexpected twist answer. Mentioning a specific character from a movie he recently enjoyed, he expressed his unique imagination and ambition by saying, “I want to try acting that expresses emotions through movement.”
Regarding genres he wants to challenge in the future, he stated, “I’ve done a lot of romance and comedy recently, so now I want to try works with a strong genre feel or historical dramas.” He added a heartfelt wish, saying, “I want to be an actor who can bring even a small smile to the viewers’ faces.”
