Director Na Hong-jin brought some laughs by admitting that while filming ‘Hope’, he felt the movie was too “kind,” and that he now misses movies with “blood.”

During a press conference for the competition entry ‘Hope’ held at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, on the 18th (local time), Director Na Hong-jin shared his genre preferences, stating, “I like thrillers, but I find filming occult movies the most fun.”

He continued, “While filming ‘Hope’, I kept thinking that this movie is excessively kind. I spent every day thinking that filming such a kind movie is a very kind act,” adding, “I sincerely miss blood right now,” which sparked laughter from the crowd.

‘Hope’ tells the story of Beom-seok (played by Hwang Jung-min), the head of the Hopohang branch office located in the Demilitarized Zone. After hearing from local youths that a tiger has appeared, the entire village goes on high alert, leading to a series of unbelievable events. This is Director Na Hong-jin’s first new work in 10 years since ‘The Wailing’ (2016) and has been invited to the competition section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival.

The press conference was attended by Director Na Hong-jin and lead actors Jo In-sung, Hwang Jung-min, and Jung Ho-yeon, as well as Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Taylor Russell.

Meanwhile, the Cannes Film Festival opened on the 12th and will run until the 23rd. ‘Hope’ will compete for the Palme d’Or against 21 other films in the competition section at the closing ceremony.
