MBC has announced that it will be deleting the coronation scene from ’21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife,’ and some drama fans are not happy about it!
An MBC official told Newsen on May 22 that the coronation scene, which served as the ending for episode 11, is scheduled to be removed.
The drama ’21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife’ got caught up in a historical distortion controversy over the coronation of Grand Prince Ian (played by Byeon Woo-seok). The heat started when it was noticed that Byeon Woo-seok wore a ‘nine-tasseled crown’ used by vassal states instead of the ‘twelve-tasseled crown’ worn by independent emperors. Additionally, the scene showed officials shouting ‘Cheonse’ instead of ‘Manse,’ causing quite a stir.
As a result, MBC decided to cut the scene. The official added, “Since the change needs to be applied across various platforms, it will take a few days to be fully completed.”
Meanwhile, some fans are taking to the official website of ’21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife’ to protest, pleading for the network to “protect the drama.”
As of May 22, the viewer board is filling up with posts such as “I oppose the demand to scrap ’21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife’,” “Honestly, it’s clearly shown as a fictional world, so why frame it as historical distortion or the Northeast Project?” “Please protect the value of the drama and respond actively,” “There are so many real people who want to protect this drama,” “The logic of those asking to scrap it doesn’t make sense,” “’21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife’ is a modern fantasy, not a historical drama,” and “The broadcaster needs to respond to the ongoing excessive distortion and attacks against the work.”
On a separate note, lead actors IU and Byeon Woo-seok posted apology letters on social media on the 18th regarding the controversy.
Director Park Joon-hwa, who helmed the series, shared his thoughts with reporters in tears, and writer Yoo Ji-won also posted an apology on the official MBC drama website.
