Eom Ji-young, the vocalist of the band KeunGrim, has personally apologized following a “singing ability controversy” that erupted after she performed the national anthem at a professional baseball game.
On the 17th, Eom Ji-young posted a lengthy message on her official account to express her regrets. She stated, “I am sorry to those who felt uncomfortable due to my performance of the national anthem,” adding, “I felt that I had many shortcomings during the process of preparing for the stage.” She reflected on her performance, admitting, “My thinking was short, and I was lacking in terms of skill.”
Eom Ji-young also shared that the performance was a very meaningful yet nerve-wracking occasion for her. She mentioned, “It was a big stage that I prepared for with a truly fluttering heart,” but added, “I am sorry that I feel I may have caused trouble for the NC team officials.” She continued, “I am gratefully accepting both the voices of criticism and the warm messages of comfort,” and promised, “I will strive with a more humble attitude to show you better performances in the future.”
Finally, she bowed her head once more, stating, “Above all, I sincerely apologize once again to everyone who felt unpleasant because of my national anthem performance.”
Previously, on the 16th, Eom Ji-young performed the national anthem before the game between the NC Dinos and the Kiwoom Heroes at Changwon NC Park. However, immediately after the performance, a debate broke out in online communities regarding her “singing style.” Some netizens expressed disappointment, claiming there were too many techniques and ad-libs for the solemn atmosphere of the national anthem, pointing out that it did not suit the typical dignity of the song.
On the other hand, some argued that excessive criticism should be avoided for a singer who tried her best under pressure. Many sent messages of support, noting that the pressure of a live stage must have been significant and hoping she would grow from this experience.
