Forget the Lee Kwang-soo who sang and danced the mosquito dance in the 2009 drama ‘High Kick Through the Roof’. In 2026, he has made a powerful entrance in ‘Goldland’ as the ultimate villain.
Disney+’s new series ‘Goldland’ is a gold-driven survival thriller where the protagonist, who gets their hands on 150 billion won worth of gold bars from a smuggling ring, fights to keep the gold amidst a chaotic mess of greed and betrayal. Lee Kwang-soo plays Director Park, a ruthless organization executive who relentlessly pursues Kim Hee-joo (played by Park Bo-young) to recover the missing gold.

While Lee Kwang-soo is more familiar to us as a variety star, he has completely transformed his image in ‘Goldland’. The atmosphere of the show shifts every time Director Park appears, delivering overwhelming tension as viewers wonder who he will threaten or kill next.
With four episodes currently released, Director Park may not have the most screen time, but he creates the most chilling scenes in every episode. From the sudden glint in his empty eyes to his reckless madness and devilish smile, he embodies the role perfectly. By using ‘tooth jam’ for a striking visual change, he shows the peak of cruelty, practically opening a new era for villains.

In episodes 1 and 2, he threatens Lee Do-kyung (played by Lee Hyun-wook) and Kim Hee-joo in real-time to recover a stolen coffin. He even has someone run over Lee Do-kyung with a car and then presses down on the head injury, demanding the coffin.
Kim Hee-joo, who stole the coffin at Lee Do-kyung’s request, also witnesses Director Park’s murderous side. In one chilling scene, Director Park jumps into the van driven by Kim Hee-joo and smashes the windshield with his forehead. In an interview, Park Bo-young praised Lee Kwang-soo’s passion, saying, “I was truly scared during filming, and he actually broke the glass with his forehead.”
Furthermore, Director Park suspects that a member named Woo-gi (played by Kim Sung-cheol) helped hide the coffin. He leaves everyone speechless when he attempts to cut Woo-gi’s ear with a knife, insisting that they must be sure there are no accomplices among them.
Notably, toward the end of episode 3, Director Park learns that the coffin contains not drugs, but one ton of gold bars. Upon discovering that it’s worth a staggering 150 billion won, he becomes even more desperate to find it.

They say a work succeeds when the villain shines. Perhaps thanks to Lee Kwang-soo’s ruthless performance—breaking glass with his forehead and attempting to cut ears—’Goldland’ has proven its global popularity. It ranked #1 in the Disney+ TOP 10 TV Shows category in Korea for three consecutive days after its release and charted in 19 countries, including Taiwan, Japan, Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, and Venezuela.
The buzz surrounding Lee Kwang-soo and his reputation as a ‘talented actor’ aren’t just products of luck. As seen in his nearly 20-year filmography, the current actor Lee Kwang-soo was built through every moment of intense contemplation and character research. Expectations are high for what the 18-year veteran actor will do next.
