By adding new settings that overwrite the old ones each season, aespa manages to keep things fresh for the general public while still satisfying their hardcore fans.

aespa (Karina, Winter, Ningning, Giselle) is returning to their signature “universe” with their second full album ‘LEMONADE’, dropping on the 29th.
As many know, aespa has been the core of the ‘SMCU (SM Culture Universe)’, which was designed to link all SM Entertainment artists into one shared world.
This gave them unique concepts like ‘Black Mamba’ and ‘KWANGYA’. They wrapped up Season 1 with their second mini album ‘Girls’ in July 2022 and Season 2 with their fifth mini album ‘Whiplash’ in October 2024.
Interestingly, through this process, the ‘SMCU’ has essentially become aespa’s own personal universe.
While ‘SMCU’ started with the ambitious goal of incorporating all SM Entertainment artists, slow progress and low participation from other groups meant aespa had to carry the torch alone. Consequently, ‘SMCU’ has long since evolved into aespa’s unique identity.
Because of this, when aespa released songs like ‘Dirty Work’ and ‘Rich Man’ that weren’t part of the ‘SMCU’, some fans predicted they were finally escaping the lore.
These predictions gained more traction because their first full album ‘Armageddon’, the highlight of ‘SMCU Season 2’, carries meanings of a “final battlefield” or “the apocalypse.”
However, aespa clarified that these guesses were wrong by stating that ‘LEMONADE’ marks the beginning of ‘SMCU Season 3’.
To be honest, aespa’s insistence on a “universe” is somewhat surprising, as lore and complex settings are losing steam in the current K-pop scene.

This is because such universes inevitably become massive and overly complex, creating a barrier to entry for new listeners.
Furthermore, when artists’ music or content becomes restricted just to fit the lore, the downsides often outweigh the benefits.
In fact, it’s hard to find K-pop groups with such vast and complex settings other than aespa and Billlie. Most groups now focus on music and choreography optimized for short-form content, memes, and challenges.
Despite this, aespa continues to prove themselves as “masters of the universe.” Analysis suggests their success lies in a strategy of maintaining a conceptual vibe while “overwriting” the old lore with new settings.
For example, in ‘MY WORLD’, which kicked off ‘SMCU Season 2’, aespa added a setting where they returned from ‘KWANGYA’ to the ‘REAL WORLD’, allowing them to explore concepts and music outside the original lore. In ‘Armageddon’, they introduced the “multiverse” and “awakening as the complete self” to maintain the universe while avoiding plot holes.
This “overwriting” method dilutes the strict continuity, lowering the barrier for casual fans. Long-time fans now enjoy the lore as an interesting element rather than demanding strict adherence to every detail. This also allows aespa to secure mainstream appeal by breaking free from restrictions on genres, concepts, and lyrics.
This strategy of overwriting settings is even more direct in ‘LEMONADE’, the start of the third season of ‘SMCU’. With keywords like “crack” and “singularity,” they are signaling new experiments without worrying too much about contradictions with previous settings.

Most notably, ‘WDA (Whole Different Animal)’ is the first lead single featuring a guest artist since ‘Welcome To MY World’ in May 2023.
Since the feature in ‘Welcome To MY World’ was by nævis, aespa’s own alter ego, it’s no exaggeration to say that G-Dragon is the first outside artist to feature on one of aespa’s lead singles. This shows an even broader direction for their activities.
Ultimately, aespa is showing a flexible way to use a “universe,” keeping the overall framework but knowing when to set it aside if it doesn’t fit.
Thanks to this clever middle-ground approach, aespa has successfully captured both the fandom and the general public, and this trend is very likely to continue with ‘LEMONADE’.
All eyes are now on whether aespa’s “survival guide for K-pop universes” will lead ‘LEMONADE’ to success.
