Kang Hyung-wook Warns Owner Protecting “Bully Dog”: “It’s Like Loving Both the Perpetrator and Victim of School Violence”

The story of Kang Gam-ja, who acted like a “bully dog” by threatening other pets at home, has been revealed. Kang Hyung-wook diagnosed the situation as being similar to a “frog in a well” and emphasized the need for a change in the owner’s attitude.

Kang Hyung-wook Warns Owner Protecting

In the 19th episode of Channel A’s dog solution variety show “Time Between Dog and Wolf 2,” which aired on the 20th, the story of Kang Gam-ja, known as the “Incheon Bully Dog,” was broadcast. Kang Gam-ja had been increasing tension at home by repeatedly attacking the other dogs.

During the broadcast, Kang Gam-ja dominated the atmosphere by reacting sharply toward the other dogs. “Heindung-i,” who was frequently attacked, became timid and unable to move freely, while “Kong-i,” who has poor vision, was also constantly threatened.

In particular, “Kun-i” stepped in to mediate by physically blocking the conflict whenever it arose. Kang Hyung-wook analyzed that Kun-i had taken on the role of maintaining peace at home, which was actually increasing the dog’s stress.

The different responses of the owners were also pointed out as a problem. The older sister owner strongly restrained Kang Gam-ja when catching the dog attacking Heindung-i, to which Kang Hyung-wook noted, “The current method is closer to an emotional reaction than actual training.” On the other hand, the younger sister owner was overly protective of Kang Gam-ja and failed to set clear boundaries.

Kang Hyung-wook explained that the current home structure focuses more on Kang Gam-ja’s emotions than on the dogs being victimized, making the situation worse. He criticized the younger sister’s attitude, stating, “It’s similar to protecting both the perpetrator and the victim in a school violence situation.”

He also noted how Kang Gam-ja persistently stared at Heindung-i immediately after being restrained by the owner. Kang Hyung-wook observed that Heindung-i had become a target for Kang Gam-ja to vent emotions, releasing stress received from the owner onto a relatively weaker dog.

Afterward, Kang Hyung-wook went for a walk to check Kang Gam-ja’s actual personality. Contrary to the strong behavior at home, Kang Gam-ja showed anxious reactions and remained conscious of the surroundings once outside. Kang Hyung-wook described this as looking as if a “switch had been turned off.”

He further analyzed that Kang Gam-ja naturally gained dominance among the overly gentle housemates. He explained that due to a lack of experience in external environments, the dog displayed excessive confidence and aggression only within the home.

He advised that training through forced suppression is not effective and suggested that the owner spend sufficient one-on-one walking time with Kang Gam-ja. He emphasized, “Ultimately, what matters is the owner’s correct leadership.”

As the walk continued, Kang Gam-ja gradually relaxed, and the owner also showed a change by controlling the dog more calmly than before. Kang Hyung-wook stated, “It’s not at a level that requires particularly serious training. There is a high possibility of improvement just with consistent walks twice a day.” The analysis concluded that the essence of Kang Gam-ja, who seemed like a tyrant at home, was closer to anxiety and a lack of socialization than aggression.

Meanwhile, “Time Between Dog and Wolf 2” is a program that examines not only the problem behaviors of dogs but also the attitudes of owners and their living environments. It focuses on identifying the causes of relationships by comparing dogs with problem behaviors to “wolves.”

Channel A’s “Time Between Dog and Wolf 2” stars Kim Sung-joo, Kang Hyung-wook, and Special MC Chun Rok-dam, airing every Wednesday at 10 PM.

The broadcast was praised for once again showing that a dog’s problem behavior may stem from the care environment and upbringing method rather than just a simple personality issue.
