How 'Mumeong Jeonseol' Beat Trot Fatigue: The Power of Second Chances!

MBN’s audition program ‘Mumeong Jeonseol – Trot Men’s Hierarchy War’ (hereafter ‘Mumeong Jeonseol’) has officially come to an end after a three-month journey. While many viewers have expressed fatigue over the flood of trot programs, ‘Mumeong Jeonseol’ is being praised for standing out by putting the participants’ stories of retrying and perseverance front and center, even within a familiar audition format.

Since the success of TV Chosun’s ‘Miss Trot’, the trot audition market has become saturated with seasonal shows and similar formats. Viewers have consistently pointed out that the genre is becoming repetitive. In this climate, ‘Mumeong Jeonseol’ shifted the focus from simply competing in singing skills to asking, “Why did they return to this stage?” The heart of the show was the realistic stories of contestants who had already debuted but never found fame, those who struggled financially after their groups disbanded, and those who stepped onto the stage feeling this was their very last chance.

The winner of ‘Mumeong Jeonseol’, Seong-ri, has a history of challenging himself in six different auditions, including Mnet’s survival show ‘Produce 101’. Jang Han-byeol, who took third place, shared a touching story of pursuing his dream of becoming a singer for 16 years, even dropping out of dental school and overcoming family opposition. Along with them, the TOP 10 selected songs that reflected their lives, wounds, families, and dreams, turning the competition into a personal journey on stage.

These stories deeply resonated with viewers. Many reacted that the experience of enduring hard times and facing failure created a stronger emotional connection than a simple success story. After the broadcast, some viewers commented, “You can really feel their sincerity toward the stage,” “Their desperation feels different,” and “I found myself focusing more on the time they endured than just their singing skills.”

This focus on individual rediscovery also translated into ratings success. ‘Mumeong Jeonseol’ maintained steady buzz amidst the competition of Wednesday variety shows, with the finale recording a peak viewership rating of 10.1%. It seems the participants’ desperation and the emotion of trying again truly reached the audience.

Of course, it is hard to say that ‘Mumeong Jeonseol’ presented a completely new format. The use of text voting, the 99-person competition structure, the TOP 7 system, and the transition to a national tour concert after the finale didn’t deviate much from existing trot audition tropes. Some point out that while it used the unique theme of being “unknown” (Mumeong), the operational method was similar to previous trot survivals.

Nevertheless, ‘Mumeong Jeonseol’ brought back the essential emotions that trot auditions often overlook. By focusing on the desperation of those who simply wanted to stand on stage again rather than fandom wars or ranking battles, it left a lasting impression on viewers. It serves as an example of how the feel of a program can change depending on which story is highlighted, even within a familiar format.

As the show ended, the winner Seong-ri was introduced as the ‘1st Legend’, hinting at the possibility of a Season 2. However, since the trot audition format is considered saturated, the success of a potential second season will likely depend on whether it can provide convincing character narratives and new elements beyond the simple “unknown” setting.
