Kim Hyang-gi Takes a Big Leap After 23 Years:

Actress Kim Hyang-gi, who debuted in 2003, shared her excitement about tackling the comedy genre for the first time.

We recently met Kim Hyang-gi, who stars in the Coupang Play series ‘Romance’s Absolute Value’, at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul.

‘Romance’s Absolute Value’ is a teen series following Yeo Ui-ju, a high school girl who writes BL novels featuring handsome teachers. Her life takes a wild turn when she encounters these teachers in real life. Kim Hyang-gi plays Yeo Ui-ju, a girl who lives a double life as an ordinary student by day and a BL novelist by night.

Talking about her first comedy role, Kim Hyang-gi opened up, saying, “Watching comedy and actually performing it are two very different things.” She recalled, “Since this role is so different from what I’ve done before, I wasn’t sure how much to amp up my tone to make it look natural. That’s why I practiced so much.”

She put in an incredible amount of effort over a long period. Kim Hyang-gi explained, “Ui-ju is a character who talks to herself a lot and has a huge amount of dialogue, so I practiced the tone and lines over and over again.” She added, “I found that even when I pushed my expression to the limit, it didn’t look as over-the-top as I expected. So, I decided to just go for it and give it my absolute maximum.”

Wrapping up, Kim Hyang-gi smiled and said, “In the end, there are many scenes I’m really happy with. The director gave me great guidance on set, which allowed me to act with confidence. I feel proud because there were so many scenes we built together by sharing our ideas.”
