The movie ‘Salmokji’ has officially climbed to the top spot as the highest-grossing Korean horror film of all time!
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticket network on the 17th, ‘Salmokji’ surpassed 3.15 million cumulative viewers. With this milestone, it has overtaken the 2003 film ‘A Tale of Two Sisters’ to claim the #1 spot at the Korean horror box office.
Now in its sixth week of release, ‘Salmokji’ continues its long-term success, maintaining a top box office position despite the arrival of new hits like ‘Michael’, ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’, and ‘Super Mario Galaxy’. Analysts say strong word-of-mouth and rave reviews have been the main drivers of its success.
Kim Hye-yoon’s performance, in particular, is stealing the spotlight. After establishing herself as the Rom-Com Queen through the tvN drama ‘Lovely Runner’, Kim Hye-yoon has now conquered the horror genre, showcasing a completely new side of herself. Along with director Lee Sang-min, who took on his first feature film, and actors Lee Jong-won, Kim Jun-han, Kim Young-sung, Oh Dong-min, Yoon Jae-chan, and Jang Da-ah, the cast has created a fresh ensemble. Some say this marks a potential generational shift in Korean horror cinema.
For those who haven’t seen it, ‘Salmokji’ is a horror film about a filming team that visits a reservoir to re-shoot after a mysterious figure is spotted on a road view, only to encounter a terrifying entity in the deep, black water. It is currently playing in theaters nationwide.
