Kim Jaehwan Opens Up: “I Wasn’t Happy When I Was Obsessed With Chart Rankings”

Kim Jaehwan Opens Up:

Singer Kim Jaehwan (29) has a clear vision for his future as he makes his first comeback after completing his military service. For him, the “process” means actively communicating with the public on live stages.

After finishing his service last December, Kim Jaehwan returned with a new album following a four-month break. Having recently released the new song “I’ll Come Get You Now,” he sat down with Maeil Business Star Today to dive deep into his direction as an artist.

He shared that his mindset has shifted significantly, stating, “I’ve realized that the process itself needs to be enjoyable.” Since music isn’t created alone, he also learned the importance of the journey shared with his collaborators.

This shift naturally led to a change in the style of music he pursues.

His new rock ballad, “I’ll Come Get You Now,” showcases a fresh vocal color and carries a comforting message: “I’ll always be by your side, even in your most exhausted moments.” Kim Jaehwan displayed his musical versatility by handling the lyrics, composition, and even the guitar performance himself.

“I thought a lot about how I should appear on stage after my discharge. In that process, my thirst for music grew even stronger. I decided that I should step forward as my true self, doing what I do best.”

These feelings came from a place of gratitude and a deep appreciation for the act of singing on stage. “I felt that I should now make music that is true to myself and suits me well,” he said. “I wanted to create music that people would naturally find cool.” This reflection eventually led him toward the direction of guitar-driven rock ballads.

His past experience of playing guitar while performing at various venues served as a key inspiration. Kim Jaehwan revealed, “I heard a lot that I looked cool playing the guitar. Since I’m someone who is more comfortable singing with a guitar in hand, I wanted to try music that highlighted that.” He is now envisioning a stage that is simpler and more sincere, contrasting with the performance-heavy stages of his idol days.

“I felt so much love from those who waited for me. Now, I want to be the one to reach out to them, and I’m ready to run to any stage.”

His time in the military was also a pivotal period for his change in perspective. Through consistent running, he reflected on himself and learned to let go of his competitive nature. “While my competitiveness has faded more than before, I still believe I need to be passionate on stage,” he explained. “Now, I want to enjoy the stage with a more relaxed mind.”

The activities with the group Wanna One were indispensable in shaping the Kim Jaehwan of today. “If it weren’t for Wanna One, the music I’m able to make now wouldn’t have been easy,” he emphasized. “Thanks to that time, I was able to make myself known, and that’s why I am who I am today.” The experience and love gained through team activities remain the strongest foundation supporting his music.

Furthermore, he described himself as a “blessed character.” He believes both his idol side, which handles dance and performance, and his current side, which encompasses ballads and rock sounds based on the guitar, originated from those days. “Both the version of me that dances and the version that sings ballads are me,” he said. “All those experiences have become great assets in creating my current music.”

“Regardless of the results, it’s enough for me if there are people who listen. I want to be a singer who can provide warm comfort in the midst of an exhausting daily life.”

Standing at a new starting line after his discharge, Kim Jaehwan is heading back toward the stage. His passion is expected to be revealed gradually through various broadcasts and festivals. It’s time to focus on the voice of “performance-type singer” Kim Jaehwan.
