“King as a Chinese Subject?” IU Opens Up About ‘Historical Distortion’ Controversy

IU, the lead of the MBC drama ’21세기 대군부인’, has shared her heartfelt feelings regarding the historical distortion controversy, stating, “It is all my fault if I have caused even a little disappointment or shown a lacking side.”

On the 16th, the finale date of ’21세기 대군부인’, IU held a group viewing event at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall in Seoul. Since it was her birthday, IU watched the final episode with her fans before taking the stage.

Seemingly mindful of the controversy surrounding the drama, she said, “I’ve had a lot on my mind lately. It would have been fine if I had done better.” She continued, “As someone who receives so much love from you all, I will do better. I will live my life without wasting a single moment to become an IU who can show a better side with more responsibility.”

She also added, “I believe everything you say has a reason and is something I must accept. If there are lacking parts, please tell me, scold me, and push me, and I will work hard to become a better person.”

While IU did not directly mention the specific details of the ’21세기 대군부인’ controversy, she appeared to be expressing her feelings indirectly.

’21세기 대군부인’ faced heavy criticism from viewers for distorting history in episode 11, which aired on the 15th. Critics pointed out that during the coronation of Grand Prince Ian (played by 변우석), officials shouted “Cheonse,” a term used by vassal states, instead of “Manse,” the symbol of a sovereign state. Additionally, the King wore a nine-tasseled crown, used by Chinese subjects, rather than the twelve-tasseled crown worn by emperors of sovereign states.

In response, the production team stated, “We sincerely bow our heads in apology for causing concern regarding the world-building settings and historical verification issues.” They added, “We will correct the audio and subtitles in reruns, VOD, and OTT services as quickly as possible.”

The drama concluded with a peak viewership rating of 13.8% (Nielsen Korea nationwide).
