Lim Ji-yeon’s brand of comedy is officially a hit!
In the SBS Friday-Saturday drama ‘Wonderful New World’ aired on the 16th, we saw a shift in the relationship between Shin Seo-ri (Lim Ji-yeon) and Cha Se-gye (Heo Nam-jun).
Cha Se-gye, who thought he only had the heart of a cold businessman, was confused to find himself swayed by Shin Seo-ri. Meanwhile, Shin Seo-ri mistook his feelings for simple “fan love.” The episode ended with a heart-fluttering moment as Cha Se-gye passionately hugged Shin Seo-ri, sending viewers’ heart rates soaring.
As a result, ‘Wonderful New World’ is receiving an explosive response after only four episodes. According to Nielsen Korea, the episode recorded a peak rating of 7.8%, with 6% nationwide and 6% in the metropolitan area. The peak rating for the 20-49 age group was 3.17%, continuing an upward trend. Furthermore, it became the first SBS Friday-Saturday drama to reach #1 on Netflix’s “Global Top 10 Non-English Shows” weekly ranking (Tudum, as of the 10th) and also swept #1 for domestic TV shows, maintaining its top spot in “Today’s Korea Top 10 Series” (as of the 17th).

At the center of this popularity is undoubtedly Lim Ji-yeon’s “hard carry.” Unlike her previous roles in genre pieces like ‘The Glory,’ where she played venomous and dark characters, she is perfectly nailing the romantic comedy and slice-of-life acting in this project.
While she shows off her presence with a sharp gaze and charisma as a Joseon villainess from 300 years ago, she brings laughter to viewers by comically portraying the quirky situations that arise while adapting to modern society in 2026.
The strength of Lim Ji-yeon’s comedy lies in the multi-dimensional nature of her character.
Shin Seo-ri is not a tragic heroine who simply accepts her fate. After being slapped by a top star (Lee Se-hee) who tried to hinder her, she immediately fights back. To learn 21st-century acting, she binges hit series like ‘Sandglass,’ ‘Rustic Period,’ and ‘Women of the Court.’ When she visits her grandmother Nam Ok-soon (Kim Hae-sook) and encounters thugs trying to get a signature for resort redevelopment, she channels ‘Rustic Period’ and declares, “I shall punish you all like Kim Du-han!” delivering a thrilling sense of catharsis with her flashy unarmed action. Shin Seo-ri’s ability to overwhelm opponents with her aura and manipulate chaebols with a single word provides viewers with a real dopamine rush.
The unique strengths of Lim Ji-yeon as an actress also shine through. Known for her precise diction and emotional expression, she continues to impress in ‘Wonderful New World.’ Whether she is shedding tears over the deja vu of being pressured by An Jong (Jang Seung-jo) to become the lover of Grand Prince Lee Hyun (Heo Nam-jun) in the past, or tearfully telling Cha Se-gye not to pity her, the actress’s skill allows the character’s dual narrative to blend seamlessly.
This “S-class K-comedy” disguised as B-class has clearly worked. Now that its powerful rival, MBC’s ’21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife’ starring IU and Byeon Woo-seok, has come to an end, all eyes are on how far Lim Ji-yeon’s solo run will go.
