Mir Deletes YouTube Video After Controversy Over How He Addressed His Mother-in-Law

Former MBLAQ member Mir has found himself in the middle of a controversy regarding the term he used to refer to his mother-in-law.

On the 24th, a Shorts video was uploaded to the YouTube channel ‘Banggane’, showing Mir outing with his wife and mother-in-law.

In the video, Mir mentioned, “Our jangmo [mother-in-law] got me herbal medicine because I’ve been struggling.” His mother-in-law showed her affection for her son-in-law, saying, “I did it so you can love my daughter. You have to be healthy to take good care of her.”

When it was revealed that the herbal medicine cost 2.26 million won, his wife joked, “My mom doesn’t have money.” Mir responded with a laugh, “What are you talking about? Our jangmo makes plenty of money.”

Mir also shared more about her, saying, “Our jangmo was born in ’58. She learns line dancing and plays the janggu. She even walks the dog for six hours a day.” He added, “She’s usually very talkative, but she’s quiet because there are many cameras. She likes me a lot.”

However, some netizens took issue with Mir repeatedly using the term ‘jangmo’ throughout the video. As the trend of using more honorific family titles has spread, critics pointed out that using ‘jangmo’ instead of the more respectful ‘jangmo-nim’ could sound rude.

As the controversy grew, the YouTube channel deleted the video.

Meanwhile, Mir married a non-celebrity woman last December.
