Director Park Chan-wook delivered a witty acceptance speech after winning the Best Film award for “I Can’t Help It” at the Baeksang Arts Awards.
The 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards took place on the 8th at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Entertainer Shin Dong-yup, singer and actress Suzy, and actor Park Bo-gum served as the hosts for the eighth time.
This year’s ceremony was graced by numerous artists who have shone in popular culture over the past year. Notably, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Korean musicals, a new musical category was introduced, meaning awards were presented across four categories: broadcasting, film, theater, and musicals.
Amid cheers from the attendees, Director Park Chan-wook shared his thoughts on winning Best Film for “I Can’t Help It.” He jokingly remarked, “The Baeksang Arts Awards judges are truly fair. “I Can’t Help It” itself is full of jokes. When you are angry or sad, you need an attitude of constantly attempting jokes, trying to make those around you laugh, and even making self-deprecating jokes. That is how you find a way out. Although I am a director who didn’t win an award at the Venice Film Festival and wasn’t nominated for an Academy Award, I received an award at Baeksang.”
Following this, the drama “Eunjung and Sangyeon” took home the Best Drama award. Director Cho Young-min stated, “You have given me such a huge award. I want to thank and congratulate Kim Go-eun, Park Ji-hyun, and Kim Gun-woo. It was not an easy project, so I am grateful to Netflix for choosing it.” He added, “There are staff members who worked with me. Since they are the ones who made this award possible, I consider us receiving it together.”
