At the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards held on the 8th, MBC’s ‘Rookie Director Kim Yeon-koung’ took home the award for Best Variety Program.
‘Rookie Director Kim Yeon-koung’ captured a dense growth narrative as volleyball legend Kim Yeon-koung stepped up as director to build a team with underdog players. The show was recognized for its unique genre achievement as Korea’s first volleyball variety show, authentically portraying Director Kim Yeon-koung’s leadership and the players’ transformation.
During the ceremony, PD Kwon Rak-hee of ‘Rookie Director Kim Yeon-koung’ shared, “When we first started the program, so many people said it wouldn’t work, but in the end, I was able to prove them wrong (on this stage).”
The PD continued their acceptance speech, saying, “If there is anyone who thinks they can’t do it or is hearing those kinds of words, I hope they can look at my case and find the strength to try one more time to prove themselves.”
They added, “What made me happiest were the supportive comments from the viewers. It was a precious experience, like a ray of light in my life as a PD.”
PD Kwon Rak-hee also mentioned, “It was a huge blessing to work with Director Kim Yeon-koung, who is sometimes like a big sibling and other times like a mischievous 7-year-old.” They then shared the news of the new season, adding, “Since ‘Rookie Director Kim Yeon-koung’ is returning for Season 2, please look forward to seeing how hard our Director Kim Yeon-koung works and how well she does.”
On the same day, MBC also officially stated, “We have confirmed the production of ‘Rookie Director Kim Yeon-koung’ Season 2 and are preparing with the goal of broadcasting in the second half of this year.”
