tvN’s new variety show ‘Undercover Chef’ features star chefs who go undercover as ‘kitchen rookies’ in local restaurants of countries that influenced their culinary journeys to tackle hidden missions. It promises unique fun by capturing the survival stories of chefs starting from the bottom, leaving their titles behind.
The teaser for the first episode reveals Sam Kim, Jung Ji-sun, and Kwon Sung-jun spending a grueling first day in kitchens across different countries. Sam Kim, infiltrating Parma, Italy, enters a local restaurant under the fake identity of a ‘former farmer,’ but creates laughs as he fumbles in a corner of the kitchen. In the middle of the rush, he cautiously asks, “Is there anything I can do?” only to receive a firm “NO.” The sight of a world-class chef experiencing the humiliations of a rookie’s life is sure to pique interest.
Kwon Sung-jun, disguised as a ‘former baseball player’ in Naples, Italy, also faces unexpected trials. Known for his precision in cooking survivals, he shows a clumsy side while prepping potatoes. As he chops them roughly, a local senior shouts, “This is how you peel potatoes!” leaving Kwon Sung-jun unable to hide his bewilderment amidst the flood of Italian nagging.
However, keeping their identities secret isn’t easy. Their ingrained chef instincts accidentally slip out, sparking suspicion among local colleagues. With professional-level knife skills and cooking techniques, colleagues sharply ask, “Have you worked in a restaurant before?” raising the tension as they risk being exposed.
The production team stated, “Unexpected situations unfold constantly,” adding, “The growth and survival stories of chefs starting from the bottom to challenge the peak of the kitchen in just five days will provide fresh fun and thrilling catharsis.”
