Comedian Seo Kyung-seok opened up about his honest thoughts on King Taejo Wang Geon, who famously had 29 wives.
On the May 15 broadcast of SBS Power FM’s ‘Cultwo Show’, where WINNER’s Kang Seung-yoon served as the special DJ, Seo Kyung-seok appeared as a guest for the ‘Jul-gyoyang’ segment.
During the show, Seo Kyung-seok noted that King Taejo Wang Geon’s greatest strength compared to other leaders was his “inclusivity.” He explained, “He treated local clans well as a way to win them over. He married the daughters of these clans to make them his own. He had as many as 29 wives!” leaving Kim Tae-kyun and Kang Seung-yoon in awe.
When Kim Tae-kyun joked that the King might have forgotten some of his wives’ names, Seo Kyung-seok quipped, “He wouldn’t be able to see everyone in February. Even if he met one person a day, he’d miss one by February 28. He’d have to split his time between morning and afternoon!”
Seo Kyung-seok further explained, “It wasn’t because he liked women, but to be inclusive,” to which Kim Tae-kyun responded, “What a great excuse!” Seo then jokingly added, “I’m jealous.” He added that kings, including those in the Joseon Dynasty, had a duty to take queens to produce an heir.
Meanwhile, Seo Kyung-seok, a graduate of Seoul National University’s Department of French Language and Literature, made headlines in 2021 after passing the real estate agent exam after two years of studying. He also became the first celebrity to achieve a perfect score on the Korean History Proficiency Test and has even authored and published a book on Korean history.
