Yeon Sang-ho's New Zombie Film 'Swarm' Already a Global Hit: Pre-sold to 124 Countries!

According to distributor Showbox on the 6th, the movie ‘Swarm’ has been pre-sold to 124 countries ahead of its domestic release on the 21st.

‘Swarm’ tells the story of isolated survivors trapped in a building during a mysterious infection outbreak, fighting against infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways.

The film has garnered massive attention from international distributors thanks to director Yeon Sang-ho, known for ‘Train to Busan’ and ‘Peninsula’, Jun Ji-hyun’s return to the big screen after 11 years, and a star-studded cast including Koo Kyo-hwan and Ji Chang-wook.

Doris Pfardrescher of North American distributor Well G stated, “The reason we chose ‘Swarm’ is because of director Yeon Sang-ho’s proven ability to direct high-quality commercial films, as seen in his previous works including ‘Train to Busan’.”

Taiwan’s Movie Cloud also noted, “It is clear that ‘Swarm’ takes a new approach that previous zombie genres haven’t attempted. It’s very intriguing that the infected are portrayed not just as a chaotic horde of zombies, but as a ‘swarm’ with evolving intelligence.”

Germany’s Plaion Pictures praised the film, saying, “Director Yeon Sang-ho has reinvented a sub-genre of film with his own original and unconventional zombie trilogy. With this work, he has reached a pinnacle and completed another masterpiece that will set a new standard for years to come.” They added, “‘Swarm’ is by far the most enjoyable experience among his works, offering pure pleasure from the start to the spectacular ending.”

Starting with the domestic release on the 21st, ‘Swarm’ will begin its sequential global rollout. It will meet international audiences in Taiwan and Malaysia on the 22nd, France, Singapore, and the Philippines on the 27th, Australia and New Zealand on June 11, and North America on August 28. A release in Japan is also scheduled for 2027.

‘Swarm’ has also been officially invited to the Midnight Screening section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, which opens on the 12th. The Midnight Screening section carefully selects a small number of genre films, such as action, thriller, noir, horror, and fantasy, that possess both artistic quality and popular appeal; previous invitees include Yeon’s ‘Train to Busan’, ‘Hunt’, and ‘Veteran 2’. ‘Swarm’ is set to be unveiled to the world for the first time through this section.
