Doctor-boxer Seo Ryeo-gyeong has returned to ‘You Quiz’ as an Asia Champion!
On the May 13th episode of tvN’s variety show ‘You Quiz on the Block’ (You Quiz) episode 343, doctor-boxer Seo Ryeo-gyeong appeared as a guest, having ascended from a Korean champion to an Asia champion in just three years.
Seo Ryeo-gyeong is a world-ranked 5th boxer and a pediatrician specializing in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). She claimed the WMA Asia Minimumweight boxing title last March after defeating WIBA champion Noruz Guro in the Asia Championship.
Sharing an update on an eye injury she sustained during the match, Seo Ryeo-gyeong revealed, “Out of 14 fights, I didn’t see a single drop of blood for 13 of them. In this match, with only a few dozen seconds left in the 8th round, a headbutt occurred and blood started dripping. I thought, ‘I’m torn,’ and at first, my vision was blocked like a curtain, then I eventually couldn’t see out of that eye. I fought aggressively to avoid losing points. I’ve recovered a lot thanks to proper treatment.”
Yoo Jae-suk asked, “When I saw the news about you becoming the Asia Champion, I wondered if you had quit the hospital. Are you planning to focus on your career as an athlete? I thought becoming an Asia Champion would require a lot of training time. How is it? Are you still working?”
Seo Ryeo-gyeong replied, “I’m still working in the neonatal intensive care unit. Some premature babies stay with us for six months or even nearly a year. It’s so cute when those innocent babies open their eyes, and it’s a great fit for me. I’ve never thought about quitting my work at the hospital.”
When Yoo Jae-suk mentioned that she seemed more confident and looked healthier than when they met three years ago, Seo Ryeo-gyeong shared, “Back then, I was a fellow, so things were unstable. Now, I have much more peace of mind. Every day felt like hell back then. I think I survived that year by counting down the days. It was so hard. Compared to my residency days, I’m much more relaxed now.”
