ENA is gearing up for another hit! Following the success of ‘Scarecrow,’ which left a lasting impression with an 8.2% viewership rating, a new well-made drama is preparing for takeoff. The new Monday-Tuesday drama ‘Doctor Island Boy’ is confirmed to premiere on June 1st at 10 PM. With just two weeks until the first episode, the show is already grabbing attention for its unique story and a cast of trending youth actors that the global K-drama market is watching closely.

Based on the popular webtoon ‘Jonber Doctor’ by author Kim Tae-pung, which received rave reviews from critics and readers on KakaoPage and KakaoWebtoon, the drama is set on the remote island of ‘Pyondong-do.’ While the island boasts beautiful visuals, it hides a twist as a notorious place that everyone avoids.
The story kicks off when Do Ji-yi (Lee Jae-wook), a public health doctor suffering from chronic trauma and a deep fear of the sea and islands, arrives at this isolated village. There, he meets nurse Yuk Ha-ri (Shin Ye-eun), who has returned to her hometown while harboring her own secrets and emotional scars.
Far from your typical heavy or solemn medical drama, the story at the Pyondong health center is full of energy. As hinted by the group poster’s phrase “24-hour complaint standby,” the duo deals with the islanders’ eccentric requests and various mishaps, creating a playful and exciting tension. Through their interactions with the warm-hearted yet troubled locals, the two will go beyond treating patients to heal each other’s pain and discover true friendship and love.

The production is bolstered by a veteran crew. Director Lee Myung-woo, who brought a fresh perspective to K-dramas with ‘Boyhood’ and ‘The Fiery Priest,’ is at the helm. Known for his sharp sense of humor and rhythmic pacing, his move into the human medical romance genre adds a layer of trust to the project. Fans are eager to see how his witty directing style blends with warm humanism.
Adding to the quality is writer Kim Ji-soo, renowned for her ability to weave complex inner emotions. Kim has perfectly balanced the tension of the medical genre with the heartwarming touch of a human drama. Planned by KT Studio Genie and produced by The Studio M, the production team is confident that the drama will offer warmth and healing to modern viewers dealing with their own anxieties and worries.

The youth lineup is another major draw. Shin Ye-eun, who rose to stardom in ‘The Glory’ and ‘The Secret Romantic Guesthouse,’ plays the positive and warm-hearted nurse Yuk Ha-ri. Her role as the emotional anchor who gently changes the world of the unstable Do Ji-yi is expected to bring great vitality to the show.
The romance poster, featuring the phrase “Acute heart-fluttering warning for a chronic island trauma public health doctor,” has already sparked excitement with its soft, lyrical island vibes. The chemistry between the two leads, sharing earphones and locking eyes, is sure to capture hearts. Additionally, lead actor Lee Jae-wook completed all filming before his enlistment, meaning fans can enjoy this romantic gift without any gaps.
The cast is further enriched by rising stars Hong Min-gi, Lee Soo-kyung, and Kim Yun-woo, who will bring more color to the island village. The production team praised the synergy between the actors, from their playful banter to their deep emotional healing. ‘Doctor Island Boy’ premieres June 1st at 10 PM on ENA and will be available globally on Genie TV and Disney+. With the pressure of following a hit, will this journey create a new K-drama legend? We’ll find out in just two weeks!
