GFRIEND's Yuju Opens Up About Health Struggles: Fainting and Loss of Appetite Due to Stress

Yuju, formerly of the group GFRIEND, has shared her heartbreaking struggle with deteriorating health caused by a loss of appetite.

In the episode of KBS Joy’s ‘Ask Anything’ airing on the 11th, Yuju, the former main vocalist of GFRIEND who is now active as a solo artist, appeared to open up about her worries.

During the show, Yuju confessed, “Whenever I start preparing for an album, I become so sensitive that my appetite disappears.” She admitted she once had the naive thought that losing weight would make her look prettier on screen, but the symptoms grew worse and began to impact her daily life.

She revealed that she once fainted while home alone and her condition worsened to the point where she couldn’t eat properly, eventually leading her to undergo an endoscopy. While the results showed no physical issues with her stomach or digestive system, the hospital suggested psychiatric consultation, noting that the cause could be psychological.

Yuju shared her honest feelings, saying, “I enjoy doing what I love, but seeing my body struggle made me wonder, ‘Am I under too much stress?'”

Lee Soo-geun empathized with her, saying, “Unlike group activities with members, the pressure of filling the stage alone must have been huge,” and added sadly, “It seems like your appetite disappeared because there are so many things you have to worry about.”

Seo Jang-hoon also offered realistic advice based on his own experiences as an athlete.

He recalled, “There were times I went into a game without eating due to stress and couldn’t run properly because I had no energy,” emphasizing that “as a professional, one must maintain good condition in any situation.”

He seriously discussed the importance of health for a singer, noting, “The voice you produce when you’ve eaten well and are in good condition is bound to be different.”

Additionally, Yuju shared an anecdote about visiting a hospital for ear issues during recording. She surprised everyone by revealing that the doctor told her, “You need to eat before taking medicine.”

To this, Lee Soo-geun gave some blunt but humorous advice: “You’re an amateur. You can’t be a professional like this. How can you comfort the public with this attitude?”

Finally, Seo Jang-hoon advised her to think about what it truly means to do her best, warning, “Songs sung right before feeling dizzy or fainting do not convey energy.”
