Musical ‘Beethoven’ is returning for its third run, bringing a massive overhaul to deliver a deeper narrative and a more immersive stage experience for the audience.
Opening on June 9, this new version of ‘Beethoven’ is based on the premiere from three years ago but has been completely reimagined in terms of structure, character relationships, and musical composition.
This season drops the previous subtitle ‘Beethoven Secret’ to focus entirely on Beethoven as a person. Unlike the premiere, which highlighted the ‘Immortal Beloved’ plot, this version focuses more on his intense artistic struggles and his inner human side.
Director Gil Memmert explained, “We wanted to take the work a step further based on the premiere. Through collaboration with the creative team and actors, we’ve refined the character narratives to be more dense.” He added, “While the premiere leaned toward a European sentiment, this season focuses on reorganizing the emotional lines and relationships so that Korean audiences can relate to them more naturally.”
Character dynamics have also evolved. Tony is no longer just a lover but has been reimagined as a ‘muse’ who supports Ludwig’s artistic journey. As a figure who helps Beethoven through his struggle with hearing loss, the relationship between the two will be more multi-dimensional and convincing.
The music has also seen a major upgrade. Beethoven’s original melodies have been harmoniously integrated with Sylvester Lebay’s signature modern touch. Some existing melodies were boldly removed to make room for new songs that strengthen the play’s flow and emotional arc.
Additionally, the conducting and piano performance scenes will be more detailed this season, vividly capturing his brilliance as both a legendary composer and pianist.
Park Hyo Shin and Hong Kwangho have been cast in the role of Ludwig. Director Gil Memmert shared his excitement, stating, “Park Hyo Shin is excellent at expressing delicate inner strength, while Hong Kwangho is superb at showing human fragility amidst intensity. Both actors will complete a charming Beethoven in their own unique ways.”
Joining them are talented actors such as Yoon Gong Joo, Kim Ji Hyun, and Kim Ji Woo, promising a high-quality production.
