Seo Ji-hye Finally Sheds the “Heart Signal Girl” Label After 10 Years, Proving Her Talent in “Scarecrow”

Seo Ji-hye Finally Sheds the

There was a cast member who became a hot topic as the “first impression favorite” in the original dating show, “Heart Signal Season 1.” That’s actress Seo Ji-hye. For a long time, she was known primarily as a “dating show alum,” but she is now opening a second chapter in her acting career with a powerful emotional performance in the ENA Monday-Tuesday drama “Scarecrow.”

“Scarecrow” is a crime investigation thriller where a detective hunting a serial killer forms an unexpected partnership with someone they despised. The story is based on the Lee Chun-jae serial murder cases that occurred in the Hwaseong-gun area of Gyeonggi-do from September 15, 1986, to April 3, 1991.

Seo Ji-hye plays Kang Soon-young, the younger sister of Kang Tae-joo (played by Park Hae-soo). Kang Soon-young dreams of a happy future with her fiancé Lee Ki-beom (played by Song Geon-hee), but her life takes a dramatic turn after getting caught up in an unexpected incident.

In the beginning, Seo Ji-hye’s acting felt like an extension of her existing image. While she blended naturally into the role with her signature pure and bright aura, there wasn’t a distinct shift compared to her previous works.

However, as the drama reached its midpoint, Seo Ji-hye revealed a completely different side. When Lee Ki-beom was suspected of being the serial killer, Kang Soon-young’s world was turned upside down. Seo Ji-hye portrayed Soon-young’s fragile emotions with a hollow gaze and a worn-out expression, moving far beyond her usual pure image.

Specifically, in the 8th episode aired on the 12th, she delivered a high-density emotional performance that led viewers to “rediscover” her. From the heartbreaking sobbing of losing her fiancé to the memory loss caused by shock and the anger directed at Cha Si-young (played by Lee Hee-jun), she meticulously portrayed a wide range of emotions. It was significant that she stably handled such extreme emotional swings within a single episode, showing a presence that didn’t fade even among veteran actors like Park Hae-soo and Lee Hee-jun.

Seo Ji-hye debuted in the 2018 JTBC drama 'My ID is Gangnam Beauty'.

Although she is now in her ninth year since debuting, Seo Ji-hye hadn’t yet left a definitive mark with a signature role. Starting with “My ID is Gangnam Beauty” in 2018, she consistently worked in projects like “The Speed of Going to You 493km,” “Meet Me in the Unexpected,” and “Family by Choice,” but it took time to leave a lasting impression on the public.

Early in her career, she struggled to prove herself as an actress due to the “dating show alum” label and controversies regarding her acting skills. For a long time, she was referred to as “that girl from Heart Signal” rather than as an actress.

In that sense, “Scarecrow” has become a major turning point in her career. Despite public prejudice and criticism, she steadily built her skills through various projects, and this role has allowed her to showcase a much broader emotional range. She has finally created an opportunity to be re-evaluated as actress Seo Ji-hye, moving past the “dating show” label.
