The shocking truth behind greedy criminals who committed crimes for money has been revealed.

The 8th episode of T-cast E Channel’s ‘Brave Detectives 5’ (Directed by Lee Ji-sun), aired on May 15, featured Detective Team Leader Kang Seung-wan of Gangwon Goseong Police Station, former Senior Superintendent Yoon Oe-chul of the KCSI, and Officer Kim Jin-soo, who shared their investigation logs.

The first case began when a husband reported that his wife had not returned home. Traces of diesel, cigarette ash, and muddy footprints were found in the bathroom, suggesting someone had broken in through a window. The husband, who lived apart from his wife during the week, had spoken to her two days prior and noted she didn’t sound well. Given the husband’s wealth as a businessman, estimated at around 40 billion won, police suspected a kidnapping for money. Indeed, continuous cash withdrawals were confirmed from the victim’s card after a payment at a nearby mart.

The culprits withdrew a total of 8.2 million won across several regions over two days. Police captured a man withdrawing cash and a silver sedan via CCTV. After tracking the vehicle and questioning rental car agencies, police received a tip about suspicious men renting a car and identified the suspects. Following the vehicle, police arrested Kim (alias), a previous offender of robbery and injury, along with his accomplices, and rescued the kidnapped woman. The victim had endured extreme terror, with her eyes and mouth covered in blue tape and her limbs bound. It was revealed that the criminals even knew the husband’s name and bank account password, meaning the husband could have also become a victim.

The investigation revealed that the mastermind was the management manager of a sauna owned by the husband. The manager and Kim had met in prison, and the manager provided information about the couple’s wealth and lifestyle. Specifically, he informed them that the husband had recently sold a building and held 3 billion won in cash. The criminals waited inside the house before the victim returned and threatened her by pouring oil on her body in the bathroom while she was on the phone with her husband. The couple stated that the manager had previously asked them for money but was turned away, which the manager claimed he resented. Ultimately, Kim was sentenced to 9 years in prison, the accomplices to 6, 4, and 3.5 years respectively, and the manager to 5 years.

Another case introduced by the KCSI was a long-term pursuit where the suspect was identified a day after the missing person report, but the arrest took two months. It started when a father reported that his daughter, a 21-year-old jewelry store employee, had not returned home after work on Friday. Police found that cash withdrawals began immediately after she disappeared. A person in a hat and mask was seen on CCTV withdrawing 4.1 million won across 14 transactions overnight. However, in the final withdrawal, the person slightly lowered the mask, exposing part of the nose and mouth, which detectives used for their investigation.

A colleague at the jewelry store recognized the man in the CCTV as the older brother of another employee. The suspect, a 28-year-old man, had a nose and mouth similar to his ID photo, and the final withdrawal location was near his hometown. The investigation team then found that the victim and the suspect were at a pub together on Friday night and later moved to a motel. Shocking CCTV footage showed the victim appearing to be dragged by force and the suspect carrying someone on his back and loading them into a car trunk.

Detectives found suspicious marks in a cornfield in the backyard of the suspect’s hometown home, where the ground was unusually bulging. After staking out areas near the parents’ and sister’s homes, they successfully arrested the suspect near his sister’s house 57 days after the report. A search of the cornfield revealed the victim’s body buried in the center, placed in a sack in a curled position, wearing the same clothes she had when she disappeared. The culprit claimed they were in a relationship and the crime happened after an argument, but there was no clear evidence to support this. Yoon Doojoon and Kwak Sun-young expressed their anger, stating they were “appalled” by the culprit’s shameless claims. The perpetrator was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
