Jun Ji-hyun of ‘Gunche’ and Jo In-sung of ‘Hope’ are hitting the Cannes Film Festival red carpet!
Director Na Hong-jin’s new film ‘Hope’, which has been invited to the Competition section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, will make its world premiere on May 17 at 9:30 PM (local time).
According to the ‘Hope’ team, lead actors Hwang Jung-min, Jo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon, along with Hollywood stars Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Taylor Russell, will attend the festival.
They will greet global audiences at the red carpet and premiere held at the Lumière Grand Theatre, followed by an official press conference on the 18th to meet reporters from around the world.
Director Na Hong-jin has a special record with Cannes, as all his works have been invited: ‘The Chaser’ (2008, Midnight Screening), ‘The Yellow Sea’ (2011, Un Certain Regard), and ‘The Wailing’ (2016, Non-competition).
‘Hope’ is garnering even more attention as it is the first Korean film invited to the Competition section in four years, since ‘Decision to Leave’ and ‘Broker’ in 2022. Director Na shared, “It is an honor. I will do my best in the remaining time.”
Director Yeon Sang-ho’s new film ‘Gunche’, officially invited to the Midnight Screening section, will meet audiences with its world premiere on May 15 at 12:30 AM (May 16, 0:30 AM). Director Yeon Sang-ho and the main cast, including Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-bin, and Kim Shin-rok, will attend the premiere.
Director Yeon Sang-ho has been honored with four Cannes invitations, starting with his first feature animation ‘The King of Pigs’, followed by ‘Train to Busan’ (2016, Midnight Screening) and ‘Peninsula’ (2020, Official Selection).
Jun Ji-hyun, visiting Cannes for the first time as a lead actress, expressed her feelings through the investment and distribution company: “I am truly happy and honored to be invited to the Cannes Film Festival, where filmmakers from all over the world gather, with ‘Gunche’. I am thrilled to present my first collaboration with Director Yeon Sang-ho on such a meaningful stage. I will do my best to show the global audience the strength of Korean genre films. Please give us lots of support and interest.”
Meanwhile, this year’s Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 12 to 23 in the resort city of Cannes in southern France. Director Park Chan-wook will serve as the Jury President, the first Korean director to ever hold this position. While Jeon Do-yeon, Song Kang-ho, and Director Hong Sang-soo have previously served as jurors, this is the first time a Korean filmmaker has been appointed as the Jury President.
