Gong Seung-yeon in ’21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife’ has brought the drama’s tension to a peak, perfectly portraying both cold determination and deep emotional scars.
In episodes 9 and 10 of MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama ’21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife’, the royal family faced chaos as the scandal of Grand Prince Ian’s (Byeon Woo-seok) contract marriage and the truth behind the late King Lee Hwan’s (Sung Joon) decree came to light. Amidst this, the precarious inner turmoil of Queen Dowager Yoon Yi-rang (Gong Seung-yeon), who is desperate to protect her son Yoon’s throne, unfolded intensely.

Once the contract marriage between Grand Prince Ian and Sung Hee-joo (IU) was exposed, Yoon Yi-rang immediately summoned the royal clan to pressure the couple. Having long been wary of Grand Prince Ian to secure Yoon’s position, she showed an even colder side. However, the appearance of the late king’s abdication decree and the truth about a past fire incident threw her into total confusion.
Yoon Yi-rang seemed to crumble before the cruel reality that her choices to protect her son’s throne had actually pushed him away. The tension reached a climax through her confrontation with her father, Yoon Sung-won (Cho Jae-yoon), revealing her deep wounds and complex emotions toward Grand Prince Ian. Additionally, her subtle movements showing concern for Sung Hee-joo have sparked curiosity about future developments.
Gong Seung-yeon displayed an incredible screen presence, densely portraying the desperate emotions of Yoon Yi-rang, who threw everything away to protect royal power. While maintaining the dignity of a Queen Dowager, she delicately unfolded the inner world of a character mixed with heartbreaking love for her son and suppressed past traumas as her position wavered due to Grand Prince Ian’s decisions.
In scenes where she interrogated Grand Prince Ian and his wife for tarnishing the royal family’s authority, she dominated the atmosphere with a chilling gaze and disciplined tone. When suspected by Yoon Sung-won regarding the late king’s decree, she conveyed Yoon Yi-rang’s state of mind through restrained breathing, suppressing explosive emotions.

Above all, the scene where she wailed while holding her son Yoon left a deep impression on viewers. Gong Seung-yeon’s deep acting skills convincingly portrayed the misery of having sacrificed herself to protect the throne, only to end up hurting the person she loves most, along with the pressure she had endured alone. Furthermore, the backstory of her having to become the Crown Princess while leaving behind her feelings of love for Grand Prince Ian during their royal school days provided a sharp contrast to her current cold demeanor, adding richness to the character.
Gong Seung-yeon’s passionate performance, seamlessly moving between her pure past and precarious present, firmly supported the center of the drama. Her slight anxiety when facing Prime Minister Min Jung-woo (Roh Sang-hyun) and her hint of worry for Sung Hee-joo proved that Yoon Yi-rang is not a simple villain, but a character with a multi-dimensional narrative.
The end of the episode hinted at a new move for Yoon Yi-rang, promising more turmoil. As interest grows over what final choice she will make after pushing herself to preserve her son Yoon’s position, ’21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife’ starring Gong Seung-yeon has only two episodes left until the finale. It airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 PM on MBC.
