Independent Director Yoon Ga-eun Pulls Off Huge Upset, Winning Best Director Over Park Chan-wook and Jang Hang-jun!

In a shocking turn of events, Director Yoon Ga-eun has won the Best Director award, beating out industry giants like Park Chan-wook and the 10-million-viewer hitmaker Jang Hang-jun!

The 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards took place on the afternoon of the 8th at COEX Hall D in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, where Director Yoon Ga-eun of the film ‘Master of the World’ took home the Best Film Director trophy.

Tearfully, Director Yoon shared, “A movie isn’t made by the director alone. It felt like it took anywhere from six years to a lifetime. There were times I mistakenly thought I was alone during that long journey, but I wasn’t. I’m so grateful to everyone who guided and pushed me from start to finish. Thank you to my staff, who were like a thousand soldiers, and the respected actors who surprised me every single day.”

She continued, “Our film is an independent movie. It wouldn’t have been completed without production support from so many places. Thank you truly.” She also added, “I learned so much throughout the process. I want to thank the survivors of familial sexual violence who shared their most painful and sad, yet shining and joyful moments through books, movies, documentaries, internet posts, and comments. I’ll take this strength and work even harder to make films. I’ll treat this as a mission to find new characters that couldn’t be captured on screen.”

The nominees for Best Director in the film category included not only Yoon Ga-eun but also Kim Do-young for ‘If We’, Byun Sung-hyun for ‘Good News’, Park Chan-wook for ‘I Can’t Help It’, and Jang Hang-jun for ‘The Man Living with the King’. With such world-renowned masters and blockbuster directors in the running, Yoon Ga-eun’s victory was a total surprise to everyone!
