The Global OTT Awards have found themselves at the center of a heated debate even before the ceremony begins. Fans are clashing over the timing of the show’s release and the criteria for selecting nominees, questioning whether it is fair to evaluate a lead actor’s performance and a director’s vision before a series has even concluded.
Recently, the Korea International Streaming Festival 2026 (KISF 2026) Global OTT Awards announced nominees across 14 categories. Among them, the Disney+ original ‘Gold Land’ sparked controversy by landing major nominations after only four episodes had aired. Lead actress Park Bo-young was nominated for Best Actress, and Director Kim Sung-hoon was nominated for Best Director.
‘Gold Land’ consists of 10 episodes in total. At the time the nominations were announced, only four of the ten episodes had been released. Drama fans have pointed out that it may be premature to judge the acting and directing when less than half of the series is available. The fairness debate intensified as other nominees for Best Actress, such as Shin Hye-sun (‘Lady Dua’) and Kim Yoo-jung (‘Dear X’), are starring in works that have already completed their full runs.

Some fans are criticizing the nomination of ‘Gold Land’ as being too early. They argue that for genre-specific works, the final evaluation of a character’s depth and the overall narrative can change significantly based on the ending. There are claims that an actor’s emotional arc and the director’s execution should only be judged after the finale. Some also suggest that being nominated based on early buzz and anticipation feels unfair compared to competing against completed series.
On the other hand, some argue that there is no violation of the rules. According to the KISF eligibility criteria, any work that aired at least one new episode between June 1, 2025, and April 30, 2026, is eligible for nomination. Based on these rules, the nomination of ‘Gold Land’ is technically valid.
Furthermore, KISF 2026 is scheduled for the 20th of next month, and since ‘Gold Land’ will have all its episodes released by the end of this month, the final judging process can evaluate the work in its entirety, just like the other nominees.

Industry insiders view this controversy as a matter of perceived fairness regarding the timing of nominations. While there are no formal issues with the eligibility, the fact that the work was not yet finished when nominees were announced felt unbalanced to viewers. This issue is particularly amplified in categories like Best Actor and Best Director, which are closely tied to the overall quality of the work.
Since OTT content is released both as full drops and sequential episodes, debates over nomination and evaluation timing are bound to recur. The current KISF 2026 dispute is less about the rules and more about the perceived fairness of the announcement timing and judging criteria. Ultimately, the credibility of the awards depends on how transparently the organizers explain the evaluation standards and the release status of the works.
