MBC’s ‘Rookie Director Kim Yeon-kyung’ has officially won the Variety Program Award at the Baeksang Arts Awards, and the best part? Season 2 is already teased!
The 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards took place on the 8th at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The ceremony was hosted by the amazing trio of Shin Dong-yup, Suzy, and Park Bo-gum for the eighth time.
The event was packed with stars who dominated popular culture over the past year. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Korean musicals, a new musical category was added this year, bringing the total to four award categories: broadcasting, film, theater, and musicals.
The big win for ‘Rookie Director Kim Yeon-kyung’ brought a funny moment to the stage. When PD Kwon Rak-hee’s name was called, he tried to walk up with Kim Yeon-kyung, but she playfully waved him off, leaving the PD to head up alone while the cameras caught the hilarious interaction.
Once on stage, PD Kwon shared, “Director Kim Yeon-kyung is sometimes like a big brother and other times like a prankster. I’m so grateful to work with such a versatile entertainer. I’m especially thankful to everyone in the volleyball world, including the professional team directors who are pushing through difficult environments.”
After thanking his family, PD Kwon Rak-hee expressed his gratitude to the writers, PDs, coaches, and announcers who served as a “reliable front.” He revealed, “Many people said this program wouldn’t work when we first started, but here I am. More than proving them wrong, what made me happiest were the real-time comments. A grandmother in her 70s said she was so excited she couldn’t sleep, and another viewer battling cancer wrote that the show gave them a will to live. It was like a ray of light in my career as a PD.” He then dedicated the award to Kim Yeon-kyung and thrilled fans by announcing, “We are returning with Season 2 this year. Please look forward to seeing how hard Kim Yeon-kyung works and how well she’ll do!”
